The Pull

Situation: Shelby Schroeder was producing an improv showed titled, “The Pull.” Based on a table-top RPG game called “Dread", the characters of “The Pull” go on a spooky journey, but this time their fate is decided by a jenga tower.

Task: I was tasked with designing promotional graphics for "The Pull" that communicated the ominous nature of the show, piqued interest of potential audience members by showcasing the jenga tower, and generate interest in the show.

Design Approach:

  • Shelby provided many visual references that were all spooky-feeling and somewhat retro, so we knew that was the direction we wanted to go. She wanted the poster to feature images of the cast members, so I directed a photoshoot to get great images of the cast.

  • One of the best parts of the show was the way suspense was built into the structure - the audience practically held their breath as the cast had to make pulls from the jenga tower, so I scaled up the jenga tower in proportion to the cast to evoke that feeling. I stylized the cast photos to look almost like they were painted, creating a vintage horror movie feel.

  • I also created cast into graphics for use on social media that had each cast member making a pull from the Jenga tower, which helped reinforce the theme and acquaint the audience with the concept of the show ahead of time.

Conclusion: “The Pull” had an extremely successful run at Huge theater despite Huge being in the process of moving buildings at the same time, and the graphics helped to create interest and draw audiences. I was brought on again to adjust the graphics for the second run of show, which was a testament to the success of the collaboration.
